Creating a Generation of Coders

Thursday, January 25, 2018

Ask a 5 year old if she knows how to code and you might be surprised to hear the answer is YES!  Instead of telling you about javascript, she'll more likely talk about this amazing video game she played that involved moving colour coded animated robots around a screen. Bayview Glen's Lower School has imbedded coding skills into the curriculum from SK to Grade 5.  Jesse Denison, our Director of Teacher and Learning, spoke at the January Parent Association meeting about the importance of digital fluency. "Coding is one of the 21st Century skills that employers are looking for in new graduates along with strong speaking and writing abilities," Mr Denison told the audience. "The games based coding platform makes it easy to learn and the kids absolutely love it."  Mr Denison says the early grades are about laying the foundation for a solid base of understanding around coding before moving into the Prep and Upper Schools. Tech, science, robotics and innovative thinking are emphasized through-out the curriculum so "we're setting them up for success by starting early".
