2010 Bayview Glen Distinguished Alumnus Award

Shelley Gupta '03
2010 Award Recipient

The 2010 Bayview Glen Distinguished Alumnus Award is presented to Awesome Music/EMI Canada recording artist Shelley Gupta ’03. Through this award, the Bayview Glen Alumni Association acknowledges Shelley’s musical talent and passion for community service. Shelley’s natural ability and desire to sing has shaped her career as a stage performer. She has been performing since the age of eight, and has appeared on television venues as varied as the Rita McNeil Show and Canadian Idol. Earlier this year, Shelley released her first major recording label single “Crazy For You”. Involved in a wide variety of charitable causes, Shelley has headed up countless events to raise money to build schools in Kenya through Rotaract, a Rotary-sponsored service club for youth, and has participated in a televised fundraiser for Asian tsunami relief. Shelley holds an undergraduate degree in business administration from the University of Toronto, where she excelled in her studies and was recognized by the Golden Key International Honour Society. She also holds a certificate from the Investment Funds Institute of Canada, and has managerial, marketing and sales experience in both the banking and hospitality sectors. But mostly importantly, Shelley received her secondary school diploma from Bayview Glen, where she contributed heavily to the school’s social and academic life.

Bayview Glen Alumni Reunion 2010
Friday, May 7 and Saturday, May 8, 2010

On Friday, May 7, Bayview Glen’s past and present grads crowded into the J.T.M. Guest Theatre for the annual Alumni Reunion. The Theatre, alight by candle and dressed in purple tablecloth with white hydrangeas, provided a warm, welcoming atmosphere for old friends to reminisce and new bonds to be formed between present and future alumni. A medley of music, performed by Bayview Glen alumni and current students, was heard over the excited chatter; the traditional smorgasbord of delicious food and drink was ever present. Door prizes consisted of Bayview Glen memorabilia from the Parent Guild Shop. New this year, a photo booth, set up in the corner of the Theater, encouraged friends to make silly memories. The photo booth was blanketed in Polaroids from Bayview Glen events from previous years. Markers were provided so a witty scribe might make comments or “tag” themselves and friends, or simply take the photos home for their own albums. Another novelty at the event was the Alumni Postcard Mailing Station. Those present could write someone elsewhere, prompting a reunion at a later date.

The festivities overflowed into Saturday, where the traditional Alumni Basketball game had expanded into a full-fledged Sports Day! Early Saturday morning, the Under 20 Boys Soccer Team challenged the Alumni Men on the Turf Field. Rain broke through the clouds, but not the boys’ spirits and the game raged on for some time. Lunch was served in the cafeteria before the Alumni versus Alumni Basketball game. This was followed by the inaugural Under 20 Girls Volleyball game against the Alumni Women. The Senior Girls won the game and we hope that they will turn this into a tradition for the Gryphon Girls. The day concluded with the climatic Basketball game: the Alumni All-Stars versus the Under 20 Boys Basketball Team. The game was close and ended in a tie, pushing it into overtime. The buzzer went with the final score 60 Senior Boys 59 Alumni, continuing this friendly and energetic rivalry for another year.

Alumni in the News - Moez Kassam '99
Proud to be honoured as a Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympic Torchbearer in Toronto, Ontario

On December 19, 2010 in the early morning, in the presence of family, friends, colleagues and hundreds of jubilant onlookers, I was given the great honour of carrying the Olympic torch on Burnhamthorpe Road in Etobicoke. I remember clapping and waving, words of encouragement and friendly pats on the back. The minus 30 degree temperature was unable to dislodge the enthusiasm of the assembled group, all brought together in that early winter morning in celebration of a common accomplishment, the awarding of Vancouver the 2010 Winter Olympic Games, and a common purpose, the endorsement of the Olympic mission, of athletic achievement and international comity. “Swifter, Higher, Stronger,” – so goes the Olympic creed. “Pride, patriotism, purpose” – that is what I felt on that December morning.

Bayview Glen Homecoming 2009 for All Alumni
Friday, October 9, 2009

We are really honoured by the loyalty of our Alumni, and we are reminded of this every Thanksgiving Weekend, as they slowly make their way back to Toronto and to visit the school. On Friday, October 9, Bayview Glen hosted its annual Homecoming Event, an occasion we have been holding for six years. It was a pleasure to see students reunite with one another and the Faculty, and to be a part of all the “catching up” our kids do in those few short hours. Special thanks to all the young people who joined us – seeing you really warmed our hearts and made us thankful!

Come home to celebrate - Homecoming won't be the same without you!
