History and Archives
Bayview Glen was founded in 1962 by Lois Doreen (nee Barwick) Hopkins. The school, originally a nursery school and day camp, was housed in a barn at 411 Lawrence Avenue East. In 1964, Bayview Glen acquired an adjoining property allowing the school to expand to include students from age two to Grade 1.
By the Summer of 1966, the school took over Treehaven Farm under the Bayview Bridge and the farmhouse became the next set of classrooms for the students. The school continued to expand through the 70s until 1980 when Mrs. Hopkins passed away and the L. Doreen Hopkins Foundation took control of overseeing the continuation of our founder’s dream.
In 1985, advocates of the school expressed the necessity for more space for the Upper School students, which led to space being leased from an engineering firm at 275 Duncan Mill Road. In 1989, the property at 411 Lawrence Avenue East was sold and the Lower School moved to the Duncan Mill Campus for the 1990 academic year.
Terry Guest was appointed Headmaster to preside over the future development of the school in 1990 and the Doreen Hopkins Foundation was taken over by the Macmarmon Foundation. The decade of the 90s was one of progress and growth, with the acquisition of the Upper School campus in 1998. During this time, the student population grew from 243 to approximately 950, ranging from preschool to university entrance.
In September 2000, after various renovations including an addition of a double gymnasium and theatre complex, the Upper School officially opened. Terry Guest was succeeded by Stuart Grainger shortly after, when he left Bayview Glen and took up the position of Executive Director of Round Square in 2001. Today, the advancement of Mrs. Hopkin’s ideals has been left in the capable hands of Eileen Daunt, who became the Head of School in 2003.
Under Mrs. Daunt’s leadership, the school continued to develop and in 2012-2014, Bayview Glen underwent renovations, including the construction of a brand new building that brought the Prep School and Upper School together. In June 2014, the new Moatfield Campus was complete and officially opened by H.R.H. The Duke of York. The new site includes a new Prep School, renovated Upper School, dining hall, recording studio, rooftop garden, fitness centre, yoga studio, learning commons, and more. In addition, the first floor of the Lower School was refurbished, and the preschool was reunited with the Lower School at the Duncan Mill Campus in September 2014.
Following Mrs. Daunt’s retirement, James Lee was announced as Head of School beginning in August 2022, and we continue to strive for excellence in learning and student development.

The mandate of Bayview Glen Archives is to collect, arrange, describe, preserve and make accessible the permanent records of the school as well as rare and unique collections that support the school’s administration, teaching, research, education and service.

Photographs:
Currently the Archives holds over 30,000 photographs, negatives and slides that depict the school, students, events, sports, clubs, camp, staff and faculty, and theatric productions. Many photographs are in the process of being digitized and catalogued to be stored on this database. To date, approximately 2,000 photographs have been added to this digital repository with more added regularly. Try searching this database for your family history or school memories.
Textual Records:
The Archives holds various records including yearbooks, school publications such as The Glen, The Glenner, and Viewpoint, student work, books, graduation booklets, pamphlets, student records, ephemera and event related publications.
Artifacts:
These include trophies, uniforms, student artwork, plaques, medals, pins and Parent Association Shop items.
Audio and Video Recordings:
The Archives holds a number of audio and video recordings including: presentations, assemblies, Prep News, concerts, sports related events and Founder’s Day ceremonies.
Access
