Aquatics Programme

As part of our New Build project, we are pleased to introduce a state-of-the-art Indoor Aquatics Facility that will enrich student learning, wellbeing, and physical development across our School community.

Beginning in the 2026–2027 school year, swimming will be integrated into the health and physical education curriculum for students in JK through Grade 12. Our aquatics programme is designed to be inclusive and supportive, meeting students at their individual skill levels and focusing on fitness, water comfort, confidence, and safe participation. The programme is not intended to replace formal learn-to-swim instruction.

The Aquatics Facility will also support the growth of our swim teams and co-curricular programming, expanding opportunities for student engagement and athletic development.

This page provides answers to frequently asked questions about the aquatics programme, including instruction, safety, scheduling, uniforms, and participation options. We encourage families and staff to review the information below and check back as additional details are shared.

Swimming will be introduced as part of the health and physical education curriculum beginning in the 2026–2027 school year for students in JK through Grade 12.

Swimming will be included as a regular health and physical education unit. Instruction will be developmentally appropriate, inclusive, and designed to meet students at their individual skill levels.

If families choose not to have their child participate in swimming, an appropriate alternative within the health and physical education curriculum will be provided and assigned by the teacher during the swimming unit.

No prior swimming experience is required. Our programme is designed to support all learners, from beginners to confident swimmers. Student comfort, confidence, and safety are central to our approach.

Swimming will be treated like any other health and physical education unit. Student progress and performance will be shared on report cards. Programme goals will include improving cardiovascular fitness, developing water confidence and comfort, and supporting safe, lifelong participation in aquatic activities.  The programme will support skill development but does not provide or replace official swimming level certification.

Bayview Glen has partnered with Shendy’s Swim Centre, a leading swim school in the GTA. Working closely with the School’s Aquatics Manager, Athletic Directors, Division Heads, and our health and physical education faculty members, Shendy’s  will provide end-to-end aquatic programme deliveryincluding: certified staffing, on-deck supervision, instruction and fitness programming, operational oversight and safety leadership and compliance management.

The Aquatics Manager will design, implement, and oversee all aspects of aquatic operations, ensuring that all safety and operational standards are met and reflect the school’s high standards of operations. The Aquatics Manager will design and lead Bayview Glen’s aquatics programme, including curriculum development, scheduling, safety protocols, pool operations, and staffing. This role ensures a consistently high standard of programming, supports the long-term success of the facility, and serves as the primary liaison with Shendy’s Swim Centre.

Student safety is our top priority. The Aquatics Facility has been purposefully designed with safety in mind. Programming will include clear pool rules, controlled access to the pool deck, appropriate supervision by certified staff, and established staffing ratios. Additional measures include a site-specific Emergency Action Plan and regular emergency drills; pre-activity safety briefings; designated entry/exit points and structured traffic flow on deck; routine equipment inspections; and ongoing water-quality monitoring. Where appropriate, students will be grouped and supervised based on demonstrated water comfort.

Our initial focus is to establish a strong, safe, and high-quality programme for students during the school day. Once the curricular programme is fully established, we will explore opportunities to extend offerings to the wider community, including a parent and tot swim programme for our Preschool students.

We are intentionally waiting until the Spring of 2027 for our JK and SK swimmers to ensure comfort and readiness, providing optimal conditions for a safe and positive introduction to aquatic learning.

Beginning May 1, families may visit the PA Shop Monday to Friday from 8:15 to 10:15 a.m. or book an appointment online for a swim uniform fitting. Swim uniforms will not be sold online and must be purchased in person at the PA Shop.

A variety of inclusive options will be available, including one-piece suits, swim shirts and shorts for all genders. Proper sizing will be important as swim uniforms are not returnable for hygienic reasons

Swimming caps will be mandatory for all swimmers. This helps reduce transition time and limits the need for hair drying, ensuring minimal disruption to classroom instruction.

Additional details, including schedules and programme logistics, will be shared with families over the summer as planning is finalized.
