BVG Network Regional Visit to McMaster University

Friday, May 26, 2017

On April 19, Mr. Hammond, Director of University Counselling, met with several Bayview Glen alumni at McMaster University. The intent of this particular visit was to continue developing the regional network in Hamilton and to provide some exam-time levity for alumni. Thirteen former students from the Classes of 2014, 2015, 2016 and 2017 visited with Mr. Hammond, as well as one alum who checked in via social media in between her exams! Many of the students commented upon how the Advanced Placement programme at Bayview Glen and the collaborative work environment we provide helped to prepare them for success at the university-level.

One of the students who met with Mr. Hammond was Sydney Valentino ’14, who is completing her undergraduate studies in Kinesiology. Sydney was in the midst of a study titled, "the effects of n-3 PUFA supplementationTroy with Sydney Valentino on muscle metabolism and muscle strength during single-leg immobilization", which is under the direction of Dr. Chris McGlory, a post-doctoral fellow at McMaster. The study essentially was  to monitor the loss of skeletal muscle mass after breaking a bone and the impact of that loss on human health. Sydney had to wear a knee brace for two weeks and have muscle biopsies before, during and after her immobilization. When asked why she would voluntarily undergo such procedures, Sydney offered, “as someone who is interested in research, I am enthusiatic to contribute to information about young women and muscle health. Also, I am involved with the Sports Medicine Program and this was an interesting way to understand and empathize with the McMaster Varsity athletes that get injured and have to be on crutches. Overall, I knew this would be a challenging experience, but as I expected, it forced me to slow down my lifestyle and see some physical challenges that come with not relying on your body being 100% healthy all the time.” Now that is dedication!

Our regional visits will continue in the 2017-2018 school year. Please contact Ms. Lau, Director of Alumni Relations, at for information or questions.
