Leadership in Action: Peer4Peer Online Peer Tutoring Platform

Date:
Tuesday, October 27, 2020
By: Nikhil Marwaha and Sydney Caduc, Grade 12

Last March, our community experienced a time of great uncertainty. Faced with this challenge, Peer4Peer was founded with a mission to create stability. The organization’s goal is to connect peers with one another and foster a positive learning environment in this challenging environment. Peer4Peer is an online peer tutoring platform run by students, for students. At Bayview Glen, we are very fortunate to have the privilege of a private education and online learning. However, we know this is not the reality for most students. Peer4Peer works to break the imbalance between resources available to the public system and the private school system. This initiative has been brought to Bayview Glen to help introduce students to new opportunities, further develop their learning skills. In addition, increase student’s confidence in their knowledge as a tutee or to share their own understandings and experience with others as a tutor.Last March, our community experienced a time of great uncertainty. Alumni Spotlight: Jordyn Listro '13

Date:
Monday, October 26, 2020

Jordyn Listro graduated from Bayview Glen in 2013. She currently plays professional soccer for Orlando Pride in the National Women’s Soccer League in the United States. She was a member of Team Ontario for four years before competing at the international level for the U17 Canadian National Team, who competed in the FIFA World Cup in Azerbaijan. From there she received a full scholarship to play NCAA Division 1 soccer at the University of South Florida. After captaining the team for her final two years she graduated with a degree in Health Sciences and began her professional soccer career in the first division of the women’s La Liga in Spain. After her career in Spain she decided to move into the medical device industry and worked as an orthopedic sales representative for Stryker before returning to professional soccer in 2019.

Alumni Spotlight: Spencer Estey '12

Date:
Monday, October 26, 2020

Spencer Estey graduated from Bayview Glen in 2012. He is a Baseball Systems Developer at the Toronto Blue Jays. He develops information systems that are used in player evaluation and started working for the team in 2016 as a co-op student at the University of Waterloo. Spencer graduated in 2017 with a Bachelor of Math degree, majoring in statistics. Math and sports, specifically baseball, have long been interests of Spencer. He started considering using computer science to blend the two as a career while at Bayview Glen and at prior co-op placements during university. Spencer hit a home run in batting practice at Rogers Centre in 2018 and finished the 2019 Scotiabank Toronto Waterfront Marathon.

Career Breakfast on Professional Athletics

Date:
Tuesday, October 27, 2020

On Tuesday, October 27, we were pleased to host our first Career Breakfast for this school year online via Microsoft Teams Live Event to explore a day in the life in Professional Athletics with two of our alumni, Spencer Estey '12 and Jordyn Listro '13.

It was interesting to hear about their differing perspectives regarding professional athletics. Spencer opened our eyes to a variety of career possibilities, such as the use of data analytics on player performance and how it has led to improved decision making and better results in the field. He also shared some wise advice - focus on a specific sport and figure out the skills that would be the most beneficial, then learn those skills and apply them to a sports team. Jordyn shared her journey as a professional soccer player both in Spain and now in Orlando. She reflected honestly on her challenges and encouraged students to take similar steps as she did. By persevering through uncomfortable situations, surrounding herself with a positive support group (which she formed at Bayview Glen), going the extra mile and remaining focussed on her end goals, Jordyn can truly say she is living her dream.

The next Career Breakfasts are scheduled for Tuesday, December 1, 2020 and Tuesday, March 2, 2021 at 8:00 a.m. online via Microsoft Teams Live Event. Please stay tuned for more details.

Yearbooks for BVG Class of 2020 Grads

Date:
Friday, October 16, 2020

The 2019-2020 yearbooks have arrived! In light of the current COVID-19 circumstances, we will be doing yearbook distribution a little different this year. For those #BVGgrads2020 who have younger siblings attending Bayview Glen, their yearbooks will be delivered to their sibling's homeroom or mentor during the school day next week. Since the school campus remains closed to visitors, we will reach out to the rest of the grads and their parents individually to confirm their address for home delivery – no pickup arrangement this year due to health and safety precautions. Thank you for your patience and understanding during the distribution process. We miss seeing all of you #BVGAlumni in person and look forward to the time when we can gather again safely! #stayconnectedonline #bvgmemories #2020yearbook #keepsafe #bvgforever
