Ctrl-Z, our world champion robotics team, was honoured with an invitation to The Prime Minister's Science Fair Round Table with the head of NSERC and Science Minister Kirsty Duncan in Ottawa. Alex and Trent, two Ctrl-Z team members, were part of a group of students from across Canada who made presentations at the work shop. The goal of the round table was to share innovative ideas in the area of science and engineering. Our students gave a demonstration to the Prime Minister and others of their Pinder Pet Finder.
As part of the one day event, Alex and Trent spent the morning getting to know more than 30 students from BC, Manitoba, Ontario, Nova Scotia, PEI, and Newfoundland. They all met with the Prime Minister Trudeau and other dignitaries in the afternoon. Stay tuned for a first hand account and more photographs from the special day.

For only the second time in history, a Canadian FLL Robotics team has captured the Champion’s Award at the FIRST® Championship. Team #5831 Ctrl-Z, a team comprising of seven Lower, Prep and Upper School students from Bayview Glen, was crowned champion at the FLL World Festival in dramatic fashion last week in St. Louis, Missouri. (FLL is ages 9 to 14 in the U.S., Canada and Mexico; ages 9 to 16 in the rest of world)
The team made three presentations in the compulsory categories of robot, research project and core values. In the robot presentation, teams outline the design process and the key elements of the robot they designed, constructed and programmed. The research project is the opportunity to present an innovative solution based on the year’s FLL theme, ANIMAL ALLIES - improving our interactions with animals. The core values evaluation is meant to showcase teams’ accomplishments in the areas of inspiration, teamwork and gracious professionalism (doing things to encourage high-quality work, emphasize the value of others and respect individuals and the community). Ctrl-Z’s robot design presentation was exemplary and the team’s robot delivered a strong performance on the competition table. For the research project, Ctrl-Z designed and built a Bluetooth-enabled pet smart collar that helps reunite lost pets with their families. The product, called the Pinder Pet Finder, received a great deal of attention leading up to the FIRST® Championship.
After the initial three presentations were complete, it was announced that Ctrl-Z and nine other teams from around the world made the shortlist for the Champions Award. The ten contenders were then interviewed by a panel of eight judges to determine the three FLL Finalists which were revealed in the ballroom at the America’s Center Convention Complex. The three Finalists, Team #1920, Flufflepuff (Granger, IN), Team #8631, St. Peters Brickbusters (East Troy, WI) and Ctrl-Z then proceeded to the adjacent Edward Jones Dome to await the announcement of first place – FLL Champion’s Award. In front of an audience of tens of thousands on Saturday night, April 30, it was announced that Bayview Glen’s Ctrl-Z had captured the top prize. Congratulations to the Finalist teams and all who competed at the FLL World Festival for a terrific ANIMAL ALLIES season!

Bayview Glen’s award-winning robotics team, Ctrl-Z, was invited to formally pitch their Pinder Pet Finder to the York Angel Investors on March 30th at the York Downs Golf & Country Club in Unionville.
As part of the 2016/2017 FIRST LEGO League season, Ctrl-Z designed a Bluetooth-enabled pet smart collar that helps reunite lost pets with their families. With the help of extensive research, consultation, surveys and hard work, the team developed a prototype that has been receiving a great deal of attention. Pinder Pet Finder has been showcased at several events including the Ontario Innovation Celebration where Ctrl-Z took home the Problem Identification Award.
Designing, building and programming a robot is one aspect of participating in FLL each year. Teams are also challenged to identify a real-world problem related to a theme and propose an innovative solution. For this season, FIRST LEGO League‘s theme is ANIMAL ALLIES and the challenge is to improve our interactions with animals.

Two of our award-winning robotics teams have qualified to take part in the second annual Ontario Innovation Celebration (OIC) hosted by FIRST Robotics Canada and ventureLAB. The FLL competition has several elements. Designing, building and programming a robot is one aspect but teams are also challenged to identify a real-world problem related to a theme and propose an innovative solution. This year, FIRST LEGO League‘s theme is ANIMAL ALLIES and the challenge is to improve our interactions with animals.
The February 25th event in Markham will feature 18 of Ontario’s most innovative ANIMAL ALLIES solutions at one location, and teams will pitch their ideas to a panel of judges. The judges will then select the two most innovative solutions to represent Ontario at in the Global Innovation Award competition, the winner of which will receive $20,000 to make their innovation a reality. Leading up to the showcase, teams will have the opportunity to receive professional coaching from industry experts in innovation and how to make a professional sales pitch.
UPDATE: Feb, 27/17 Ctrl-Z took home the Problem Identification Award. The team is absolutely thrilled with the result and look forward to incorporating many of the takeaways from the OIC into their preparations for their next competition.
The Pitch: Ctrl-Z Bayview Glen’s innovative solution is Pinder Pet Finder, a smart pet collar that helps to reunite you with your lost dog or cat. Your furry friend wears the collar, and it connects to your phone by Bluetooth. If your loved one wanders away, the Bluetooth signal is lost and Pinder goes into SOS mode announcing, both visually and audibly, that the animal is lost and brightly displaying the owner’s contact information for passersby to see. The Pitch: Team RED has designed a Thermo Bot. It’s an autonomous robot with a built in thermometer that constantly monitors the temperature of barn hay. It relays temperature information to farmer’s phones via push notifications. The goal is to prevent barn fires and save the animals and resources that would be destroyed if fire was to occur. Canada's most famous guitar was held, played and celebrated in three separate Bayview Glen assemblies to the delight of hundreds of our students. More than two decades in the making, Six String Nation is the legacy project started by award-winning writer and CBC broadcaster Jowi Taylor. On an invitation from the Prep School's own Scott Milligan, Mr Taylor spoke to enthralled audiences about the guitar's journey. 64 symbolic pieces, from Pierre Trudeau's canoe paddle to Rocket Richard's Stanley Cup ring, are woven into this one-of-a-kind guitar. Mr Taylor traveled all over the country collecting important artifacts and significant objects. "I soon realized I wasn't just gathering stuff, I was gathering stories," said Taylor. He spoke of being frustrated with the cliché stereotypes of our country that include donuts and hockey. "We are so much more than that," said Taylor. "We have to get better at telling our own stories so we have a deeper understanding of what it means to be Canadian."
Several of our students played the guitar, nick-named Voyageur, at each of the assemblies.
Mr Taylor said his project has been a transformative experience and its impact has been far-reaching. With the celebration of Canada's 150th birthday this year, Six String Nation is much in demand.
On the way out of the presentation, students chatted with each other about their favourite part of the guitar while others crowded around the stage hoping to have a chance to hold Voyageur. As everyone trickled back to class, Mr Taylor packed up the guitar as he prepared for his next school visit where more students will celebrate Canadian heritage six strings at a time.

TechnoCup is a homegrown idea created and hosted by the Bayview Glen Prep School. This year, the February 7th event will mark the 8th annual competition. We have invited 13 other CIS Ontario schools to participate in a bridge building competition for Grade 7 students. Teams will use their knowledge of Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Mathematics (STEAM) to compete against other teams to build a bridge using the West Point Bridge software on their devices. It is truly a 21st century learning experience, requiring students to apply collaborative skills, communication skills, critical thinking, and creativity in an authentic environment. It works incredibly well in deepening the Grade 7 curriculum too, as there will be a hands-on structure challenge where students have to construct physical bridges from various materials.
On January 19, our students participated in a tryout to form the team of 12 students who will be participating in the competition. The tryouts consisted of completing a timed bridge design challenge, which modelled what will happen at the actual competition. The goal was to create a stable bridge, with the cheapest construction price. The students who will represent Bayview Glen at the 2017 TechnoCup competition are: Nicole Choe, Macy deBruin-Sawutz, Jacqueline Fung, Sophia Gianotti, Sarah Lewis, Paavan Patel, Alexis Seaman, Aidan Snaiderman, Nicholas Vettese, George Vrachas Matthaios, Sunil Wijeysundera and Sydney Ray-Ellis.
When students crossed over from the Lower School this past fall to begin their journey in the Prep School, a new musical experience presented itself. Grade 6 students began learning to play a variety of brass and woodwind instruments. (flute, oboe, clarinet, bass clarinet, trumpet, French horn, trombone, baritone, and tuba) On Thursday, February 2 at 5:30 pm, our young musicians will delight family and friends with a display of their newly acquired talent. But this is not a standard "sit in your seat" affair. This celebration is all about interaction and participation. Students will demonstrate their individual instruments to their guests and give a few pointers of their own.
By way of a warm-up, teachers from the Prep School dropped by for some one-on-one instruction. Join us in the J.T.M. Guest Theatre for an hour of music and fun.

Two of Bayview Glen's robotics teams had outstanding results at the FIRST LEGO League (FLL) East Provincial Championships this past weekend at UOIT/Durham College campus in Oshawa. Ctrl Z won top prize winning the Champions Award first place and will now move on to the FIRST Championships in St. Louis. Team RED won the core value award for inspiration for their performance. Both teams were two of seven to be invited to the prestigious Ontario Global Innovation Celebration to be held next month in Markham. There is a research component to the robotics programme. Along with building and operating robots, students are challenged to create an innovative solution to a problem. This year's theme is Animal Allies - making our interactions with animals better. Bayview Glen began its partnership with Adventure Place- Better Beginnings as it was just launching its Holiday Hamper Programme in 2001. The charitable organization works with young, vulnerable families to ensure healthy development of children up to six years of age. These families may be new to the country and having difficulty learning a new language, finding work, coping with a restricted budget, or finding it challenging accessing community services. Each class and mentor group at Bayview Glen fill a hamper for a selected family. The students are given a few details about their designated family including the ages of the children and their interests. Donations are sorted, packed and labeled for distribution. Volunteers from the school and Adventure Place hand deliver the gifts in early December.
