On June 25, 2018, we started our inaugural Bayview Glen Co-operative Education Programme. This programme starts with in-class sessions where students learn and discuss workplace culture from job readiness to confidentiality to legislation, such as human rights and employment rights and responsibilities, all in preparation for the community component, 'the placement'. Recognized for his volunteer work, Rawlson King ’95 won a 2018 United Way Ottawa Community Builder of the Year Award, conferred during National Volunteer Week.  The award recognizes his tenure over the last three years as the volunteer President of the Overbrook Community Association, where he successfully advocated for a city-led youth strategy and a response plan to serious crime in his neighbourhood. Greg Church started at Bayview Glen in Grade 6, along with his younger brother Geoff, as his step-grandmother was affiliated with the school. BVG life for Greg consisted of moving from the valley to the current Upper School, ski trips to various countries, experiencing a wide variety of sports, spending time in the computer lab, being a Prefect, winning art and citizenship awards and many fond memories. On April 19 and 20, Mr. Hammond, Director of University Counselling, was at the University of British Columbia – Okanagan participating in the Canadian Independent School Counsellors conference. While there he met with two Bayview Glen alumnae: Rachel Aizen ’07 and Madeline Daigle '17. On April 18, the Bayview Glen Alumni Association hosted our inaugural BVG L!NK Alumni Networking Speaker Series focussed on the finance industry. Our panel talked us through their thoughts on the current state of the industry and how it is evolving, as well as providing practical advice on career development. Mr. Hammond, Director of University Counselling, met with Bayview Glen alumni on April 5 studying at the University of Waterloo and Wilfrid Laurier University, followed by a visit with those at the Royal Military College of Canada and Queen’s University on April 10. Dr. Vinay Bhide’s Bayview Glen adventure began in the valley in 1980 as a 6 year old entering Grade 1 and as you’ll read below, he’s never really left. We are delighted to welcome back two alumni speakers, Christopher Flora ’04 and Wen-Hao Lue ’09, on Tuesday, March 6 for our last Career Breakfast of the school year. After graduating from Bayview Glen in 2004, Christopher Flora entered into the Computer Engineering co-operative programme at the University of Waterloo. Christopher was exposed to a variety of work opportunities that helped shape both his academic and career decisions.
