Private Music Lessons are available to students in SK to Grade 12, whose musical knowledge is at the beginner or advanced level. Students in SK are only eligible for Introduction to Violin and private violin lessons.
Each week, students enrolled will receive a private half hour lesson on the instrument of their choice either before or after school. All instructors are highly qualified musicians from the community and will each determine, through consultation with parents, the needs and goals for each child. Royal Conservatory of Music examination preparation is also an option available. This programme is based on the full year and does not run on a term-by-term basis.
Students may choose instruction from a wide selection of instruments: voice, piano, guitar, percussion (Grade 6 and up only), tuba, baritone, trombone, trumpet, French horn, saxophone, clarinet, theory, violin, oboe, flute and ukulele. With the exception of voice and piano, students will be responsible for providing their own instruments. All students will also be responsible for the purchase of music books and sheet music that may be assigned by the instructor. It is also recommended that piano students have piano or full sized keyboard at home for practice.
Students will be assigned a half-hour time slot between 3:00 and 6:00 p.m. Students must also enroll in the After School Programme (Grades SK-8 only) if their lesson begins later than 4:15 p.m. on the day of their music lessons, so that they are fully supervised before and after their lessons.
Introduction to Violin
The Private Music Lessons Programme is thrilled to present a new strings program that will be offered to incoming SK and Grade One students this fall. Students will have the opportunity to enroll in Introduction to Violin, small group classes of five to six students, dedicated to teaching the fundamentals of violin and the development of musical knowledge. These classes are designed for students with little or no experience on the violin and will be taught through a Suzuki-based method. This method embraces Bayview Glen’s Whole Child philosophy as it helps to develop confidence, a love of learning, goal-setting abilities, collaboration and compassion; along with memorization, improved concentration, coordination.
As this is the first year of the program, we are offering these classes to Monday after school. If there is greater interest, we will provide additional classes on other days during the week. Han Hou, University of Toronto Doctoral of Musical Arts candidate and Suzuki expert will be leading the students through weekly hour-long classes on Mondays beginning at 3:00pm. Students will have an opportunity to showcase their work by participating in a Spring Recital hosted at the Lower School. Mr. Hou will also offer private 30 minute violin lessons to students looking for one-on-one attention. His contact will be provided upon successful registration.
Students will have the option to rent a violin for the school year with an addition fee. Please understand that all students must bring their own violin if not renting through the school. All information regarding payments are under “Fees”.
If you are interested in enrolling your child, the following steps are required:
- Complete the Online Registration Form
- Payment of administrative fee
A student will be officially registered and placed with an instructor only after the form and payment are both received. The Private Lessons Programme will be as accommodating as possible in terms of scheduling, however requests cannot be guaranteed. Priority will be given to students who register before September 3.
